While wandering the backroads of North Carolina, loner Raymond Toker (Henry Thomas) discovers an infant. Unable to locate her parents or find someone in town who will take the child, Toker ends up growing quite fond of her. His own family, including his beloved little sister, had perished in a house fire several years before and Toker had little joy in his life since then.
When a traveling salesman (David Strathairn) appears and starts snooping around, the mystery of the abandoned child begins to unravel.
