East Meets Midwest . . .
But Which Midwest???
.
When recovering co-dependent Ruby Weaver (Marisa Tomei) meets Sam Deed (Vincent D'Onofrio), he says he's from Dubuque and has only lived in NYC for a few months. Ruby is skeptical of any relationship because she's trying so hard to deal with her issues with her therapist (Holland Taylor). Despite Ruby's initial resistance and Sam's awkward persistence, they move in together but Sam's idiosyncrasies and things Ruby questions about him, cause them to have a serious discussion in which Sam makes an outrageous revelation.
Ruby learns all about Anachronists and Gene Dupes, back-travel and back-stories, assimilation and RTDS (Residual Temporal Drag Syndrome).
Also appearing are Tovah Feldshuh and Bronson Dudley as Ruby's parents; José Zúñiga as Sam's best friend; Nadia Dajani, Cara Buono, Lianna Pai and Tamara Jenkins as Ruby's gal pals; and Anthony Michael Hall as himself. Also appearing are Sean Gullette and Richard Portnow.
Written and directed by Brad Anderson.
Run time: 1 hour, 50 minutes
Rated R for language.
My personal rating: B
