Cradle Will Rock (1999)

.
"Well, you can't climb down and you can't sit still. That's a storm that's gonna last until the final wind blows, and when the wind blows the cradle will rock."

Based on true incidents of the Depression era and the WPA's various projects for artists.

Orson Wells (Angus Macfadyen) sets about to produce a Broadway play about pro-union activities which is reviled as anti-establishment and communist oriented. Nelson Rockefeller (John Cusack) has artist Diego Rivera (Rubén Blades) decorate the lobby of Rockefeller Center. Italian Countess Margherita Sarfatti (Susan Sarandon) sells art for Mussolini.

Others in the stellar cast include Hank Azaria, Cary Elwes, Philip Baker Hall, Vanessa Redgrave, Gretchen Mol, Joan Cusack, John Turturro, Emily Watson, Bob Balaban, Jack Black, Paul Giamatti, Barnard Hughes, and many more.

Written and directed by Tim Robbins.

Run time: 2 hours, 12 minutes

Rated R for some language and sexuality.

My personal rating: A
