Edge of the City (1957)

originally titled:
A Man Is Ten Feet Tall
Axel Nordman (John Cassavetes) is in trouble. He's AWOL and afraid to go home to his parents (Ruth White, Robert F. Simon) in Ohio. He's running scared of being discovered and court martialed.

When Nordman arrives in NYC, he finds a job as a longshoreman and befriends a co-worker, Tommy Tyler (Sidney Poitier). Together with Tommy's wife Lucy (Ruby Dee) and a new girlfriend, Eileen (Kathleen Maguire), begins to relax and enjoy life.

But when Nordman's boss, Charlie Malik (Jack Warden), finds out about Nordman's secret, Nordman becomes the boss' target -- especially since friendships between whites and blacks was uncommon in the mid-1950s. The prejudice leads to violence on the dock with tragic results and a police investigation that is thwarted by fear and bigotry.

Directed by Martin Ritt.
