Engineering professor Bob Kearns (Greg Kinnear) is obsessed with creating what he calls the Kearns Blinking Eye Wiper, a control for vehicle windshield wipers that varies the rate and speed of the sweeps. Once he perfects the design he approaches Ford Motor Company to stick a deal for Kearns to produce the units and Ford to buy them from him. But the deal falls apart after Ford has had a look at the engineering design and the company goes on to manufacture the Electronic Intermittent Windshield Wiper for their own line of vehicles.
Enraged, Kearns begins a one-man stand against Ford for stealing his idea. The battle takes years, sinks Kearns into paranoia and deep depression, and causes huge stress between Kearns and his devoted wife Phyllis (Lauren Graham).
Also appearing are Dermot Mulroney as Kearns' long-time friend, business partner, Alan Alda as Kearns' attorney, and Bill Smitrovich as the judge.
