The Crossing Guard (1995)

.
Facing Demons
.
When John Booth (David Morse) is released from prison after serving five years for manslaughter, Freddy Gale (Jack Nicholson), a seedy Los Angeles jeweler whose daughter died because of Booth, gives Booth warning that he has days to live before Gale kills him.

This idea has obsessed Gale for the entire time since his daughter's death and lead to the end of his marriage to Mary (Anjelica Huston) and resulted in Gale living a very destructive life with alcohol and prostitutes. Booth feels guilt, remorse and depression about what he is done but does nothing to escape Gale's threat.

As they approach the determined date, each man is forced to confront their own issues. Gale's grief and personal sadness transcends the loss of his daughter. In the climactic scene, Gale and Booth live out a serious cat and mouse game.

Robin Wright Penn appears as JoJo, a woman who befriends Booth; Piper Laurie and Richard Bradford are cast as Booth's parents; David Baerwald is Booth's friend Peter; Priscilla Barnes is one of Gale's prostitutes, and Robbie Robertson as Mary's new husband Roger. Shawn Penn's mother, Eileen Ryan, plays the woman customer in the jewelry store, and his father, Leo Penn, also had a small role.

The song "Missing" was written and performed by Bruce Springsteen.

Written and directed by Sean Penn.
